Age spots, also called liver spots and solar lentigines, are small dark areas on the skin. They vary in size and usually affect adults over the age of 50.
Age spots can appear anywhere on the body but are typically found on areas of skin that are exposed to sun i.e. face, arms, shoulders and the back of the hands.
Age spots are a result of excessive melanin (skin pigment) production. Skin aging, excessive sun exposure and use of tanning beds can all contribute to the development of age spots.
Avoiding excessive sun exposure/ sun beds and the regular use of SPF 50 will help prevent the development of age spots. At Richmond Cosmetic Clinic, we offer a range of treatments for age spots chemical peels including Obagi® blue peel radiance and Obagi® blue peel and Obagi® nu-derm skin treatment system, injectable and laser treatments.
