Crows feet are the lines that radiate outwards from the outside corner of the eye (like the foot of a crow). These lines are most pronounced when you are squinting, laughing or smiling.
The muscle that enables us to close our eyelids is know as the orbicularis oculi. Over time the frequent contraction of this muscle during facial expression leads to the formation of crow’s feet. Factors that can exacerbate the appearance of these lines include UV light damage through excessive sun / sunbed exposure as well as smoking.
Typically, these lines begin to appear during the third decade of life. As the ageing process advances crow’s feet can develop into static limes meaning that they are visible even when the face is at rest.
For the majority of clients Botox® alone can produce effective results for the treatment of Crows Feet. For clients presenting with deeper, static lines a combination of Botox® with dermal filler can help correct this cosmetic concern. Besides Botox® there is a range of other treatments available to help crow’s feet. These include Platelet Rich Plasma and for clients who would prefer not to have injectable treatments, microneeedling (Dermapen, Dermastamp and Dermaroller), chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser treatments.
Life style factors such as excessive sun exposure and smoking can exacerbate the appearance of crow’s feet. Minimising UV light damage, stopping smoking as well as adhering to a diet rich in antioxidants will help to prevent these lines from becoming more pronounced.
