Sculptra® is an injectable treatment containing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) a collagen stimulator. PLLA is a biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic material, which is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body. It works by stimulating the body’s own collagen to smooth out wrinkles and lines and restore lost volume in the face, décolletage and hands.
Once injected Sculptra® works within the deeper layers of the skin, revitalising collagen production and helping to restore the skin’s inner structure and volume. As the PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production thereby restoring facial volume and plumping out wrinkles and folds in the skin.
The procedure is performed by Dr Baba, a highly trained and experienced aesthetic doctor who is also a senior trainer for this procedure at London Aesthetic Academy (www.londonaestheticacademy.co.uk)
Typically, two to four treatment sessions (one or two vials per session) delivered four to six weeks apart will provide optimal results.
Due to it’s unique mechanism of action the effects of Sculptra® develop gradually. Typically, it takes between two to six weeks to begin to experience visible improvement in treated areas. Clinical evidence demonstrates that the results of Sculptra® can last in excess of three years.
Sculptra® can be used to address the following concerns:
Sculptra® is not suitable for tear trough correction (below the eyes) however treatment using Sculptra® in other areas of the face can improve the appearance of tear troughs.
At Richmond Cosmetic Clinic we use microcannula for all our Sculptra® treatments. The use of a micro cannula to inject the treatment area helps reduce the occurrence of bruising and swelling hence there is minimal downtime following this procedure and complications are rare. The majority of clients are able to return to normal activity the next if not the same day. The treated area can appear slightly swollen for a few days following treatment and occasionally mild bruising may occur. The procedure itself is usually well tolerated, and any discomfort afterwards can be adequately managed with oral paracetamol.
The complications of Sculptra® treatment are uncommon and these include bruising and swelling. The incidence of such complications is minimised by the use of microcannula. Formation of nodules has been reported. However, at Richmond Cosmetic Clinic we follow strict guidelines in preparing, administering and post-treatment care to prevent nodule formation.
